Ola Maps Introduces Competitive Pricing to Challenge Google Maps: Key Details and Benefits

Ola founder Bhavish Aggarwal’s AI startup Krutrim has announced a new pricing policy for Ola Maps, offering a compelling alternative to Google Maps. This move includes five million free API calls per month for startups in India and prices that are 50% lower than Google’s rates.

New Pricing Structure for Ola Maps

On July 18, 2024, Bhavish Aggarwal unveiled the new pricing structure for Ola Maps via a post on X (formerly Twitter). The policy aims to support innovation in India and reduce dependency on global tech giants like Google. Key points of the new pricing structure include:

  • Five Million Free API Calls: Startups in India can benefit from five million free API calls per month.
  • Significant Cost Reduction: The rates for larger volumes are 50% less than those of Google.
  • Extended Free Usage: Startups and small to midsize businesses (SMBs) on the ONDC platform can enjoy three years of free usage.

Comprehensive API Support by December

Aggarwal’s post highlighted that while Ola Maps currently supports all main APIs, it will be feature-complete for various APIs, SDKs, and niche use cases by December. This development aims to enhance the platform’s appeal and usability for developers.

Google’s Response and Krutrim’s Differentiation

Google plans to reduce prices for its Google Maps platform starting August 1, aiming to attract more Indian developers. However, Aggarwal emphasized that Krutrim’s pricing strategy considers domestic factors, making it a more attractive option for local developers. According to a Moneycontrol report, Ola Maps API launched in May, providing mapping and location-based services.

Transition from Google Maps to Ola Maps

In early July, Ola Cabs transitioned from Google Maps to its in-house Ola Maps, anticipating annual savings of approximately ₹100 crore. This strategic move underscores the company’s commitment to leveraging its technology and reducing costs.

Encouraging Developer Adoption

Aggarwal is actively promoting Ola Maps on social media, offering a one-year free access plan for developers. As of July 18, over 10,000 developers have signed up for the platform, highlighting its growing popularity and potential to attract new users.

Ola Maps’ new pricing policy, featuring significant cost reductions and extended free usage, positions it as a formidable competitor to Google Maps. With comprehensive API support and active promotion by Bhavish Aggarwal, Ola Maps is poised to drive innovation and support the development of location-based services in India.
