In a groundbreaking development, OneWeb India, a subsidiary of the Eutelsat Group and endorsed by telecom giant Bharti Group, has received a nod from India’s space regulator, IN-SPACe, to introduce commercial satellite broadband services in the country. This significant approval positions OneWeb India as the first organization in the nation to be granted such authorization, solidifying its status as the sole satellite broadband service provider to have obtained all necessary regulatory clearances prior to its commercial launch.
A Leap Forward for Connectivity
The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) announced that the approval for Eutelsat OneWeb’s constellation is valid for a period of five years. However, the commencement of OneWeb’s services is contingent upon the allocation of satellite spectrum to the company.
“We are delighted with the Indian space regulator’s green light to launch Eutelsat OneWeb’s commercial satellite broadband services in India,” stated Sunil Bharti Mittal, co-chair of Eutelsat Group’s board. He emphasized the critical role this plays in realizing India’s ambition to provide internet connectivity for all, aligning with the vision of Digital India. Mittal affirmed that Eutelsat OneWeb stands ready for deployment pending the final spectrum authorization required for the launch of commercial services.
Bridging the Connectivity Gap
Cyril Dujardin, Co-General Manager of connectivity at Eutelsat Group, underscored the importance of collaboration across businesses, governments, and regulators to bridge the global connectivity gap. “We are pleased to have received these approvals from the space regulator, bringing the country a significant step closer to providing high-speed connectivity to even the most remote locations,” Dujardin remarked. Having completed their Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellation last year, Eutelsat OneWeb is strategically positioned to deliver vital connectivity services to businesses across India.
Lt. Gen. AK Bhatt (Retd.), Director General of the Indian Space Association (ISpA), welcomed the IN-SPACe authorization, noting that OneWeb has become the first company to receive such approval. Expressing optimism, Bhatt anticipates that the government will soon decide on satellite spectrum allocation, paving the way for the initiation of next-generation satellite communications in India.
Partnering for Progress (IN-SPACe)
In a collaborative move in March, OneWeb joined forces with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to launch 36 satellites, marking another milestone in their pursuit of advancing satellite technology.
This IN-SPACe approval not only positions OneWeb India as a trailblazer in the satellite broadband sector but also aligns seamlessly with the government’s initiatives for widespread digital connectivity. The move reflects the commitment of both private enterprises and government bodies to work together for the advancement of technology and connectivity in the nation.
